Composer: Maurice Ravel (1875 - 1937)
Work: Ondine. Lent from Gaspard de la Nuit (1908)
Performer: Ivo Pogorelich
This piece is based on a tale of a water nymph, Ondine; who seduces onlookers who gaze into her lake, with her sweet melodious song. Ondine tries to lure unsuspecting victims to visit her in her underwater kingdom. Ravel, notorious for taking an extraordinary amount of time in composing his works, meant for this set of three pieces, ‘Gaspard de la nuit,’ to be the most technically demanding set of pieces for solo piano (in his day). This is one of my all time favorites. Take a moment and listen.
"I did my work slowly, drop by drop. I tore it out of me by pieces."
